Write, Re-Vision, Revise with Ellen Sussman

Retreat description: In this combination workshop and craft class we'll examine all aspects of fiction and memoir -- character development, plot, point of view, pacing, dialogue, descriptive writing, and more -- and you'll learn to apply these valuable skills to the rewriting process. Each member of the class will submit ten pages of a story, novel or memoir for workshop. Throughout the week, in the combination of classes, one-on-one instruction, and spacious time to work from your lovely desk, you'll apply the skills you learn to make your story more powerful and compelling.

We'll begin the week on Sunday with a one-and-a-half-hour class about the writing process from the first glimmer of a new idea to a polished manuscript. On Monday and Tuesday mornings we'll discuss each one of the submitted stories. Wednesday will be a free day -- for exploring or resting or hiking or...thinking about how you'd rewrite your ten pages, given the feedback of the class the insights from your one-on-one, and our deep dive into craft. Our morning classes on Thursday and Friday will offer you a chance to talk through that rewriting process. Each student will also have a one hour private session with Ellen. On the last evening we'll all participate in a reading of our work.
